Camogs complete comeback to overcome Tyrone

The Armagh Camogie team defeated their rivals Tyrone in Crossmaglen on Saturday to reach the Premier Junior All-Ireland Final.

Although the home side may have made the brighter start, it was Tyrone who had built up a strong half time lead.

Three first half goals from the Red Hands allowed them to march into the second period with five points to spare.

However, Armagh displayed all their determination and drive to drag themselves back into contention.

Two goals from substitute Eimear Smyth put Armagh back on track while Rachael Merry and Ciara Donnelly were accurate throughout.

It was Merry and Donnelly who helped themselves to two early frees while Laura Smyth also raised a white flag to put her side 0-3 to 0-0 ahead.

Tyrone came roaring back and two quick fire goals shot them into the lead before a fantastic Merry point narrowed the margin.

The visitors weren’t for slowing down and their third goal of the game put them five points to the good.

Leanne Donnelly ensured all of Armagh’s inside line got on the scoresheet while Tyrone hit their first point of the day on the 30th minute.

This brought the score line to Armagh 0-5 Tyrone 3-1 by the time the half time whistle sounded, with the wind now favouring Armagh for the second period.

Once again, the Orchard County opened the scoring with Merry and Donnelly both striking from the dead ball.

Tyrone kept on top with a score of their own but two goals within a matter of minutes saw Armagh shoot ahead.

Eimear Smyth was in inspired form and fired the ball to the net with ferocious power before Merry slotted over her fourth.

Before Tyrone could settle, Smyth had the net rattling once again and suddenly it was Armagh who were in front, 2-8 to 3-2.

The sides exchanged scores in the final few minutes as Tyrone couldn’t get the goal that would revive them.

Ciara Donnelly rallied over two more brilliant points to ensure Armagh booked their place in this year’s decider.

They will now face Cavan who saw off Roscommon in their last four clash. The game takes place on Saturday 5th of December.

Armagh Scorers: Eimear Smyth 2-0, Ciara Donnelly 0-4 (3f), Rachael Merry 0-4 (2f), Laura Smyth 0-1, Leanne Donnelly 0-1.
