Tir na nOg topple relegation rivals Tones

Tir na nOg 2-9 Wolfe Tones 0-9

Tir na nOg picked up two huge points in the race to avoid relegation with a six point victory over Wolfe Tones.

A superior second half display allowed Jim McCooe’s men to leapfrog their relegation rivals at the bottom of the Division 2A table.

Wolfe Tones made the brighter start with the opening score of the game coming inside the first two minutes.

Caolan Farrell swung over a super score with the outside of his right boot, but the hosts responded empathically.

Three on the bounce from Tir na nOg put them ahead. Oisin Conaty, Conor McCormac and Conor Larkin split the posts.

An Odhran Magee point, set up by Matthew Hagan, halted the scoring spree, but Tir na nOg pushed ahead with the next attack.

The home side won the resulting kick out, bombed forward and ace attacker Conaty fired the ball into the net.

Marc Davidson chipped over a free to put his side five ahead. But, momentum switched hands as the Tones took control.

Magee kickstarted their revival with a free before four points on the trot from Paudie Judge, including two fine efforts from play, levelled the game.

Magee nudged Peter Nugent side ahead for the first time since the opening score with another from the dead ball.

But Davidson equalised before the break leaving the half time score 1-5 to 0-8.

Tir na nOg stormed ahead at the start of the second period, with three points on the trot.

Davidson and Conaty sandwiched a Niall Robinson point after he reacted quickest to a rasper Conaty effort which bounced back off the bar.

The hosts did grab another three-pointer though, with McCormac rattling the net to put his side six points ahead.

A third Magee free closed the gap briefly. But, the home side sailed over the final score of the evening with Conor Larkin raising a white flag.
