Division 1A & 1B Previews – Gameday 17

Division 1A – All games on Friday at 7.30pm

It’s winner takes all in the final round of the Division 1A league as table toppers Madden and Clann Eireann clash.

Both sides are on the same number of points, 17, and both have an identical score difference of +29.

Madden have a slight advantage on head-to-head, having defeated Clann Eireann by one in their first meeting.

So, a draw would do for the Raparees, who will also play on home turf, as they go in search of the league title.

Aron McKenna is set to miss out through suspension while Peter Lappin limped off in their most recent league game against Ballymacnab.

Clann Eireann, who need to win by two or more, look to have a full deck to pick from. Conor Turbitt, Barry McCambridge and Tiernan Kelly are all back from county duty.

It makes for a compelling final day of action and whoever comes out on top will earn the first piece of silverware of 2023.

Relegation battle

At the bottom end of the table, there’s one relegation spot left and it’s either Granemore or Ballymacnab who are going down.

The Nab won Division 1B last season so will be eager to retain their status, as will their near neighbours.

Ballymacnab won the first meeting by two points and have added Rory Grugan to their arsenal since.

Granemore head into the game off the back of an 11-point defeat to Crossmaglen in their refixed game last week.

Jason O’Neill picked up a heavy knock in the second half, so his availability is unknown ahead of the game.

Mullaghbawn have already learned their fate and will spend 2024 in Division 1B. They take on Killeavy on Friday.

Tommy Coleman’s side are out of the title race, and it would take a huge upset to see them fall out of the top four.

Should the Harps beat Cross, and Mullaghbawn defeat Killeavy, both the Harps and Killeavy would finish on 15 points.

Killeavy currently have a better score difference of +7 and it’s a draw on head-to-head. So, it’ll all come down to scores should those results happen.

Cross are more or less guaranteed a top four finish as they lead the Harps by two-points and have a much better score difference.

Division 1A – All games on Friday at 7.30pm

Like the top tier, the league title will be fought out between Dromintee and Silverbridge this Friday evening.

The Bridge, who won the previous meeting by five-points currently lead the way by two at the top of the table.

That five-point win also has Colm Nally’s side ahead of their opponents on score difference, by five-points.

For Dromintee to get their hands on the league title, they’ll have to see off their visitors by six points or more.

The mid-section of the table is just as important as four teams are vying for the final two spots among the top four.

St Peter’s, Maghery, Sarsfields and Clan na Gael are all tied on 14 points. They can’t go up or down, so a top four finish is the target for each.

St Peter’s have the best scoring record and they travel to Grange on Friday, who have already been relegated.

Sarsfields likewise face Shane O’Neill’s who like Grange, unless they win the SFC, are heading to Division 2A.

The big one is Maghery against Clans and both sides will have their county contingent back in the fold.

It’s not a straightforward as winner takes all, but whoever emerges victorious could clinch a top four place.
