2023 Hurling Team of the Year – Defenders

It’s time to vote for the players that you think deserve a place in the 2023 The Sideline Eye Hurling Team of the Year.

11 players have been nominated for the defensive positions. Vote for the six defenders you think deserves a place on the team.

The voting polls will close at midnight on Sunday and the team will be announced next Monday.

Paul Gaffney (Middletown)

Rock solid at the back all year long for Middletown as they completed a famous five in a row of Senior titles.

Stephen Renaghan (Keady)

Back in the fold for Keady and back to his best. Renaghan was in great form for his side right through the campaign.

Odhran Curry (Middletown)

Curry had another fantastic season in the Middletown defence as they kept a clean sheet in the county final.

Gareth Larkin (Killeavy)

Captained Killeavy to their first championship title in ten years and led from the front right throughout the season.

Gerard Barton (Cuchulainns)

Barton was a real leader in Cuchulainns back six and helped his side reach the last four of the championship.

Kieran McKernan (Middletown)

Yet another fantastic season from McKernan, who is surely one of the first names on the Middletown team sheet.

Barry Shortt (Keady)

Shortt manned the centre of the Keady defence as Declan Napier’s side made it to another county final.

Tiarnan Nevin (Middletown)

Led Middletown to glory as joint captain of the team. Nevin was inspirational at times in the back line.

Rory Shine (Sean Treacy’s)

Starred for Sean Treacy’s as they reached the Junior Championship final, although they just came up short against Killeavy.

Oisin Fearon (Craobh Rua)

Fearon a good campaign in the half back line for Craobh Rua during a difficult time in the group stages.

Peter Smith (Killeavy)

A great campaign from Smith in the Killeavy defence. He was outstanding for them right through the season.
