Armagh newbies impress McGeeney

A number of players impressed Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney at Saturday’s Club All-Stars vs County Future Stars game.

The Club All-Stars won handsomely in the end, with a first half hattrick from James McCormack setting them on their way.

McCormack was one of the players that caught McGeeney’s eye. But the Armagh boss was impressed by a number of newbies on both teams.

“There were a good few players who we were happy with,” said the Armagh manager. “James (McCormack) was at the end of a lot of moves.

“I thought Sean (McCarthy) at full back was very good, and he has been very good in trials in fairness.

“I thought Paddy Carr really tried hard and put his hand up too. Mickey McConville had a good game.

“Conor Magennis tried really hard I thought. When you’re playing in defence and you have numbers coming at you it’s tough, but he never stopped, and he never gave up.

“We’re going to give some of them another chance with another game next week,” added the 2002 All-Ireland winning captain.

Returnees

There are a number of exciting youngsters coming through the ranks while some more experienced heads have also returned from injury.

“We have a great bunch of young fellas pushing hard,” continued McGeeney, now entering his tenth season in charge of Armagh.

“The likes of Daragh McMullan and Oisin Conaty are pushing hard, and Sean Conlon came on there too.

“And then you have TK coming back from a lot of bad injuries last year, Oisin O’Neill back in the team.

“Paddy Burns back looking for game time, Niall (Grimley) looking for game time. They were fellas we just didn’t have at our disposal last year, and they’re pushing hard.

“So, we’re looking forward to it (the McKenna Cup). Hopefully we’ll have a good Christmas, we haven’t cancelled it yet, and they’ll train up until then, and then give it a good lash in the new year.”
