2023 End of Year Review – Armagh Hurlers

The Armagh hurlers finished 2023 with five wins from their 11 competitive outings and showed signs of what they can do.

A second-round defeat to Monaghan seemed to hamper Armagh’s promotion intentions, but they still reached the league final.

That Monaghan loss split solid victories over Louth and Mayo, heading into the final two rounds.

Roscommon were much the better team in round four and it showed on the scoreline. Armagh did little to trouble the Rossie’s, in Dr Hyde Park, and the hosts won 2-20 to 0-6.

Armagh still had a chance to reach the league semis and be in with a shot of promotion, but it all came down to the final round.

Armagh eventually edged a nip and tuck encounter with Fermanagh, winning by the minimum of margins in the end.

That saw the Orchard County reach the semi-finals of the league while also relegating Fermanagh in the process.

In the last four, Karl McKeegan’s side avenged their earlier defeat to Monaghan, claiming a 13-point victory.

That set up a winner-takes-all league final with Roscommon, with the winner capturing the silverware and promotion.

While Armagh gave a better account of themselves, they just came up short once again, losing by eight this time.

They didn’t have to wait too long to get another crack at their Connacht rivals. The sides clashed in the opening round of the Nickey Rackard Cup.

It was Armagh who had a landslide win this time around, leaving Dr Hyde Park with a 2-24 to 0-18 victory.

Heavy back-to-back defeats to Donegal and Wicklow meant Armagh were more concerned with the bottom of the table rather than the top.

Another one-point victory over Fermanagh secured their place in the competition for the upcoming 2024 campaign.

Armagh lost to Louth at home in the final round, but the result was of no concern to the Orchard County at that stage.

Once again, promotion will be top of the to-do list in 2024. Armagh will be eyeing up a strong league campaign once it all kicks off.
