Armagh name experimental line up

Armagh have named an experimental side to face Donegal in tomorrow night’s McKenna Cup opener in Ballybofey.

Most of the players are members of the current u20 team. 14 of the named starting side will make their senior debuts.

Madden’s Joe Sheridan made his debut against Tyrone in the 2021 McKenna Cup. He also netted in last year’s opener against Antrim and featured against Cavan in round two as well.

Clan na Gael have the most representatives in the starting 15 with a third of the team made up from the Lurgan club.

Barry O’Hagan, the current Armagh u20 boss and former Clans player, will manage the team tomorrow night too. The 2002 All-Ireland winner will come up against Jim McGuinness on the sideline.

Pearse Og clubman Rhys Stevens has been named in goals and his positioning is an interesting choice. Stevens is a score-getting forward at club level.

Starting line up

Perhaps Stevens, our one to watch for Pearse Og ahead of the club championship campaign, could perhaps play an Ethan Rafferty-inspired sweeper-keeper role.

Cathal Agnew of Armagh Harps and Killeavy’s Conor Magennis are the corner-backs. Sam McClarnon of Clan na Gael lines out in the full back position.

Clann Eireann clubmen Emmett Magee and Sean McCarthy, who impressed in the recent Club All-Star charity game, are in the half back line alongside Madden’s Sheridan.

Tadgh Grimley of Armagh Harps will partner Madden’s Patrick Carr in the middle of the field. The pair shared the centre of the field for the u20s in last years championship.

Last year’s u20 captain Sean Conlon of Silverbridge is named at wing half forward. Clan na Gael duo Brendan O’Hagan and Callum O’Neill complete the line.

Cian an Campbell and club All-Star Michael McConville of Clan na Gael are in the two corners with Clann Eireann’s Daniel Magee is at full forward.
