Armagh suffer cruel defeat to Derry

Armagh were cruelly defeated by Derry in the opening round of the 2024 McGurk Cup with five the difference in the end.

Karl McKeegan’s side held the lead for the majority of the contest, but Derry burst into life in the final quarter.

Goals from Armagh newbie Alex O’Boyle and Danny Magee had the Orchard County five ahead at half time.

The second half was fairly evenly matched as the sides traded scores, but Derry nailed two goals themselves.

The second three-pointer put the Oak Leaf County ahead and there wasn’t enough time for Armagh to mount a comeback.

Derry got the game up and running with a score inside the opening two minutes before Armagh shot ahead.

O’Boyle, making his Orchard County debut, slotted over three frees on the trot to put his side in front.

Derry battled back with a brace to tie things up, but three more O’Boyle frees restored the Armagh lead.

Goals

The hosts sliced the margin to the minimum before O’Boyle, Armagh’s top scorer on the night, rattled the net.

Sean Watters and Stephen Renaghan also split the posts, while Derry nailed a point either side of Renaghan’s score.

Tiarnan O’Hare slotted over a score while Derry pulled one back. But Danny Magee fired home Armagh’s second goal to give them a 2-9 to 0-10 half time lead.

O’Boyle traded scores with the opposition at the start of the second period, as did Killeavy sharpshooter Joe O’Connor.

Another Derry score was matched by Stephen Renaghan before a quick fire 1-1 from the hosts tied things up.

O’Connor once again exchanged efforts with Derry midway through the second half before O’Hare nudged them ahead.

Two more O’Boyle frees were cancelled out as Derry rattled off a burst of 1-2 to go ahead for the first time since the second minute.

Fionntan Donnelly fired over a score to offer McKeegan’s side hope, but Derry marched five points up.
