Reel looks ahead to Croke Park date

Stephen Reel insists that his Cullyhanna side won’t be travelling to Croke Park just to make up the numbers.

The St Patrick’s men reached the All-Ireland Intermediate Club final after a deserved three-point win over Kildare’s Allenwood.

Ross McQuillan’s goal at the start of the second half was the difference in the end. Cullyhanna now face Cill na Martra of Cork in the decider.

“It might not come around in our lifetimes again,” said Reel, referring to his Cullyhanna side playing in Croke Park.

“For that reason, you have to really work and make the most of this opportunity. We really have to make the most of it and maximise this opportunity.

“There is no point in going to Croke Park for the day out, we are going there to win it. The stakes are so high, and we are really looking forward to it.

“There was a lot of pressure on this game because they wanted to play in Croke Park, they wanted to play in an All-Ireland final and they want to win one.”

Allenwood proved tricky opposition for the south Armagh men and pushed Cullyhanna to their very limits.

Cullyhanna led by five midway through the second half, but Allenwood were determined to get back into the game.

Kildare legend Johnny Doyle was inspirational for the Leinster champions, kicking two points, one in each half.

“What a player and what a man Johnny Doyle is,” added Reel, who praised his captain Pearse Casey for his man-marking role.

“To see him still playing at that level is a credit to him, but probably Pearse came out with the upper hand, probably that bit bigger physically and stronger.

“It was a good battle and an interesting battle, and we are happier with how we got in midfield than we did the last day. So, we’re happy now to be into the final.”
