The Armagh u20 hurlers lost the opening round of the Ulster u20 development league against Tyrone on Saturday.

Played in Middletown, the away side rattled home two first half goals which proved the major difference in the end.

Armagh hung in and battle hard but struggled to close the gap that the two majors had opened up.

Tyrone opened the scoring inside the first few minutes, but Daire Harvey got the Orchard youngsters back on level terms.

The two goals followed through Leo Hughes and Fionn Corry to put Tyrone seven points in front.

Harvey swept over another score from a free while Killeavy man Darren McMullan traded scores with the opposition.

McMullan and Paddy Lynch both raised white flags before a third from Harvey left six the margin at half time. 2-6 to 0-6 in favour of Tyrone.

Vice-captain Jack Scallon slotted over a free at the start of the second half. Harvey then exchanged pointed efforts with the Tyrone attack.

The Red Hands pushed further ahead with a flurry of scores, putting them 11-points to the good with 15 minutes remaining.

Ruairi Grimes along with Harvey (two frees) added to Armagh’s tally to leave seven between the teams at full time.
