Armagh hurlers suffer narrow defeat

Monaghan 0-23 Armagh 0-20

Armagh suffered a three-point defeat to Monaghan at Clones on Sunday, as their search for a first win continues.

Alex O’Boyle was once again the star of the show for Karl McKeegan’s side. But even his haul of 0-14 wasn’t enough to secure victory.

The home side got things up and running with a brace from inside forward Thomas Hughes to give them an early 2-0 lead.

Armagh fought back as this year’s top scorer O’Boyle opened his account with a long range free.

Sean Watters levelled things up before a second O’Boyle free nudged Armagh ahead for the first time.

Pauric Malone levelled once again for the Farney County before O’Boyle’s third put Armagh back in front.

Another Hughes double, split by a Leo Moloney free and followed by Conor Gernon’s first put Monaghan 7-4 ahead.

O’Boyle split the posts with another dead ball effort, but his point was cancelled out by Niall Garland.

The Armagh attacker added another two points to his personal tally, which were matched by Oran Kiernan and Garland.

Two more from Hughes, who was proving a real handful for the travelling defence, opened up a five-point gap.

O’Boyle swapped scores with Malone to leave five-points the difference at the half time break, 0-13 to 0-8.

O’Boyle reduced the deficit immediately at the start of the second half but again Monaghan replied through Kiernan.

Hughes and O’Boyle traded scores, as did Sean Og McGuinness and Moloney before O’Boyle slotted over his tenth.

Moloney and Martin Murphy made it a six-point game before O’Boyle and Peadar McBride narrowed the gap.

O’Boyle’s first from play brought Armagh closer, as did points from Niall Lennon and Shea Harvey, to leave one between the teams.

Moloney fired over five on the trot, but two O’Boyle scores kept Armagh in touch late on. But that’s as close as they could get, with three the difference in the end.

Armagh Scorers: Alex O’Boyle 0-14 (13f), Sean Watters 0-1, Sean Og McGuinness 0-1, Peadar McBride 0-1, Niall Lennon 0-1, Shea Harvey 0-1.

Monaghan Scorers: Thomas Hughes 0-7, Niall Garland 0-2, Pauric Malone 0-2, Leo Moloney 0-8 (8f), Conor Gernon 0-1, Oran Kiernan 0-2, Martin Murphy 0-1.
