Orchard Minors lose out to Mourne men

Armagh 1-8 Down 2-9

The Armagh minors suffered a four-point defeat at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds against Down in the opening round of the u17 league.

A goal in each half were the main scores for the visiting side, although Armagh hit the net themselves in the second period.

Armagh fought hard having fallen behind by seven points at one stage in the second half, and the gap proved too much in the end.

James McCooe got the game up and running with a point after six minutes, which was cancelled out by Down’s Darragh Poland.

Poland then fired a sweetly struck effort into the bottom corner to put Down ahead, although Armagh responded with a Diarmuid O’Rourke free.

Aidan O’Rourke’s side could have had a goal of their own, but Aaron Garvey’s effort from the spot crashed off the post.

A Fionn Ó Tuathail point split two more Down scores from Barra McEvoy and Danny Mclogan as Armagh trailed 1-3 to 0-3 at the half time interval.

Garvey slotted over the first score of the second period, with a mark inside the first minute, but it was match by a Conor Ward point.

Eoin Duffy and Caomh Agnew swapped scores with McEvoy, before Down raised a second green flag, converting their own penalty kick.

Poland added another Down score before Armagh full back Gavin O’Rourke offered his side a lifeline with a goal in the final few minutes.

McCooe and Diarmaid O’Rourke exchanged efforts with the Down attack as the away team held on for a four point win.

It’s Monaghan up next for the Armagh Minors as they travel to Castleblayney next weekend for their second round tie.
