Armagh hold firm to edge out Fermanagh

Fermanagh 0-11 Armagh o-15

Armagh continued their winning streak in Division Two as they picked up an away day victory against Fermanagh.

It was a nip and tuck first half, but a scoring spree midway through the second period gave Armagh some breathing space.

The win keeps Kieran McGeeney’s side joint top of the league. Donegal currently hold the number one spot due to score difference.

Fermanagh broke the deadlock after two minutes with a breakaway move resulting in a Declan McCusker point.

Blaine Hughes tied things up, firing over a 45 moments after missing one, before Turbitt gave Armagh the lead.

Stefan Campbell set up an Andrew Murnin point while Conor McGee and McCusker responded for the hosts.

Both teams had goal scoring opportunities but failed to hit the net in the first half. Armagh’s kick out press did bring plenty of joy though.

James McMahon and Campbell exchanged efforts, as did Joe McDade and Cian McConville to leave thing level.

Ciaran Mackin assisted a Murnin mark before Rory Grugan opened up a two-point lead for the Orchard County.

Peter McGrane grabbed arguably the score of the game. He blocked down McGee in his own half before powering forward and firing over the bar.

Fermanagh had the final say of the first half, with Conor McShea narrowing the gap to two. 0-8 to 0-6 at the half time break.

Ultan Kelm got things up and running after the turnaround with a free, but Armagh stretched their lead with four points in five minutes.

Turbitt kicked a free after Aidan Forker was fouled while Grugan, Turbitt and Murnin all split the posts.

Garvan Jones pulled one back for Fermanagh, but it was soon cancelled out at the other end by Campbell.

Armagh could and should have grabbed a goal when they turned the ball over, and the keeper was off his line, but Paddy Burns’ effort drifted wide of the post.

Two pointed frees from Sean Cassidy and Jones kept Fermanagh in touch before Campbell smashed over his third.

Hughes knocked over another 45 which was matched by Callum Jones, with four the difference in the end.
