Armagh Hurlers aim to secure their status

It’s all to play for in the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds this weekend as Armagh hope to retain their Division Three status.

A victory for Karl McKeegan’s side doesn’t guarantee anything. They need Cavan to see off Monaghan to avoid demotion to Division Four.

They take on a Louth side that are in the exact same situation. The Wee County currently sit one-point above their hosts.

The pair usually serve up an entertaining encounter when they lock horns and it’s usually Armagh who come out on top.

In fact, the sides have clashed in the league four times in the last five years and Armagh have won all four.

Things haven’t been going well for Armagh since their round two draw with Sligo as they’ve lost back-to-back outings against Ulster rivals Monaghan and Cavan.

Last week’s defeat to the Breffni Blues particularly hard to stomach. Armagh led for the majority of the game but two late goals from Cavan gave them the victory.

Armagh fielded without the likes of Middletown men Odhran Curry and Paul Gaffney, who could feature this weekend.

It’s been a frustrating campaign, but the one bright spark has been Alex O’Boyle, who’s scoring rates have been incredible.

He racked up an individual tally of 0-11 last weekend, of Armagh’s overall score 0-16, bringing his personal haul to 2-40 for the campaign.

If Armagh have any hope of surviving, a lot of it rests on his shoulders. They have plenty of other talented players right throughout the team including captain Tiarnan Nevin.

He is the main man in defence along with Kieran McKernan while Fionntan Donnelly is another score-getter up top.

It’s an important game for both sides and the two-points on offer are of huge value. Perhaps home advantage can guide Armagh over the finishing line.
