All-Ireland glory for St Ronan’s girls

St Ronan’s College, Lurgan 3-7 Presentation College, Headford 0-10

St Ronan’s claimed All-Ireland glory on Saturday afternoon when they saw off Presentation College, Headford, Co. Galway.

The Lurgan school lost last years All Ireland Post Primary School Junior ‘B’ Championship final but made no mistake this time around.

Two early goals helped the St Ronan’s ladies get a foothold in the game and they controlled the rest of the contest.

Aoibhin Donoghue and Evie McCafferty rattled the net for the eventual winners inside the first few minutes.

They added a few points to their tally but were scoreless for 20 minutes until Cassie Henderson split the posts.

Presentation College, Headford added a few scores of their own in the meantime. That left St Ronan’s ahead by five-points at the half time interval, 2-3 to 0-4.

Both sides started the second half brightly and added to their tallies with points at either end of the field.

That was until St Ronan’s extended their lead when Henderson, their top scorer on the day, struck a third goal.

Substitute Lauren McAlinden got in on the scoring act, although her point was matched at the other end.

Henderson and Donoghue extended the Lurgan ladies lead and although Presentation College hit a few themselves, the gap was too big to catch.

Aoibhin Donoghue, scorer of their first goal, was awarded the Player of the Match award for her display.

Captain and midfielder Evie McCafferty, who was also among the goal scorers, received the trophy on behalf of her school.
