Donegal deny Armagh league crown

Armagh 0-14 Donegal 0-15

Donegal collected the Division Two title as they overcame Armagh at Croke Park with the minimum of margins to spare.

Armagh trailed by four midway through the second half but five-points on the trot put them ahead.

But Donegal finished with a flurry and landed three of the last four points to nip ahead just at the right time.

The sides drew when they previously met in the league, but Donegal held the upper hand this time around.

Oisin Gallen opened the scoring straight away from a mark while Donegal could have followed it up with a goal.

A block from Oisin Conaty and save from Blaine Hughes denied Donegal before Jarly Og Burns levelled things up.

Niall O’Donnell exchanged efforts with Burns after Armagh’s own goal chance went abegging. Conaty this time was blocked down by Caolan McGonigle.

Ciaran Thompson and Conor Turbitt raised two white flags apiece while an outstanding Rory Grugan point nudged Armagh back in front.

Another massive Grugan effort split converted frees from Gallen and Thompson before Conaty grabbed his first.

Thompson, a real pain in Armagh’s side throughout the first half, brought the half to an end. His fourth of the first period put Donegal ahead 0-8 to 0-7 at the half time break.

Donegal started the second period much brighter than their opponents, landing three of the first four points.

O’Donnell traded scores with Turbitt while Gallen and Shane O’Donnell put Jim McGuinness’ side three up.

Niall O’Donnell stroked over a third while Armagh missed another goal chance. Following good work from Grugan and Rian O’Neill, Peter McGrane’s effort was saved by Shaun Patton.

Two Grugan frees made it a two-point game before Stefan Campbell played in Turbitt for a fisted point.

Campbell then fired over the equaliser before Oisin O’Neill gave Armagh the lead for the first time since the 32nd minute.

Two quick fire points from Caolan McGonigle and Gallen followed while Conaty and Aaron Doherty traded scores.

That proved to be the match winning score with Donegal getting their hands on the Division Two title with a point to spare.
