Culloville survive late Ballymacnab comeback

Ballymacnab 3-8 Culloville 3-9

Culloville survived a late Ballymacnab rally to secure a one-point win to kickstart their Division 1B campaign.

The Blues, managed by former Down star Danny Hughes, held a nine-point lead into the final quarter.

While the Nab rallied with two late goals from Kieran Hughes, it wasn’t enough to get something from the game.

Culloville made the perfect start, with wing back Fergal Kieran rattled off 1-2 inside the first ten minutes.

Hughes pointed Ballymacnab’s first before Charlie Garvey raised a second green flag for the visitors.

Ballymacnab began to find their feet and scores from Ryan Watters and Hughes helped narrow the gap.

A superb Oisin McGivern goal followed by another score from Watters left just one-point the difference.

Dara Quinn and Watters traded scores before the break, with Culloville ahead by the minimum, 2-3 to 1-5.

Like the first half, Culloville got off on the front foot after the turnaround with points from Quinn and Paul Kingham.

Pearse Hughes pulled one back for the hosts, but it was cancelled out by Culloville captain Fearghal Traynor.

Kingham palmed home a third major for Hughes’s side while Quinn and James King both split the posts.

The Nab stormed back into the game late on, kickstarted by a quickfire 1-1 from top scorer on the night Hughes.

Quinn slotted over a free, which was matched by Hughes while the same man grabbed his second goal to leave one the margin.

That was as close as Ballymacnab could get however and Culloville held on to pick up and opening day win.
