Division 1A & 1B Match Reports – Week One

Division 1A – Granemore 0-7 Madden 0-7

Granemore and Madden couldn’t be separated on the opening day of the Division 1A league, drawing 0-7 apiece.

Madden came from six-points down at the break to earn a draw with a last minute free from Conor Grimley.

Granemore, with the breeze at their backs, drove into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead at the break, and scored just once after the turnaround.

Eoghan O’Neill hit three of the first four points (one mark and one free), with Brendan Boylan also pointing.

Karl McQuaid and O’Neill both raised white flags to give Stephen Cusack’s side a six-point advantage.

Grimley got Madden up and running ten minutes into the second half with back-to-back converted frees.

McQuaid traded scores with Aron McKenna while three frees form Grimley left one the difference.

Grimley stepped up to rattle over the equalising score from a huge 55-yard free in the final minute of the game.

Round up

League champions Clann Eireann came from four-points down at half time to defeat Dromintee by three.

Gareth Kilgallon claimed the games opening goal during the opening period, giving his side a 1-4 to 0-3 half time lead.

But Clann Eireann fought back after the interval, holding Dromintee to one-point to win 0-11 to 1-5.

Silverbridge likewise came from seven down at the half time break to overcome Killeavy by two-points.

Sean Boylan rattled the net for Killeavy, giving them a 1-7 to 0-3 half time advantage. But Silverbridge fought back to win 1-11 to 1-9, with the help of a Sean Rock goal.

Two second half goals from Ronan Fitzpatrick saw Crossmaglen defeat Armagh Harps. The visiting side led 4-3 at the break, but the Rangers pushed on in the second half to win 2-8 to 0-8.

Division 1B – St Patrick’s 1-13 Maghery 0-5

All-Ireland Intermediate champions Cullyhanna got their senior campaign off to a winning start against Maghery.

Tony Donnelly and Michael Gallagher traded scores early on before St Pat’s hit the net. Kieran McCooey played through Shea Hoey who slipped the ball over the goal line.

Pearse Casey and Hoey pointed while the two combined for a second Casey point in between two Kevin Robinson frees.

McCooey slotted over the final score of the half to put Cullyhanna ahead by five at the break, 1-5 to 0-3.

Cullyhanna stuck the first four-points of the second half through Paudi Conlon, Donnelly (2) and Caolan Reavey.

Robinson and James Carragher converted frees while Mickey Murray and Stefan Forker swapped scores.

Conlon and Kieran Hoey raised white flags before the finish to give St Patrick’s an 11-point victory.

Clan na Gael 1-10 Mullaghbawn 1-11

Mullaghbawn captured a one-point win away to Clan na Gael with three points on the trot late on.

A Patrick McAteer score split two frees from Pearse Quinn (including the winner) to hand Mullaghbawn victory.

Clans made the brighter start with Cian France claiming two-points before Niall Loye netted for the visitors.

Quinn pointed while Clans raised their own green flag. With McAteer off his goal line, Diarmuid O’Hagan loped the ball into the net.

Jack Bennett and Fionn Downey traded scores with Tom Lavery and Mattie Lennon before Pauric Mackin tied things up at half time, 1-4 each.

Lavery exchanged efforts with Loye and Quinn while Lennon did likewise with Quinn to keep the score even.

Jamie Brady flicked over a point while France got his third before Quinn and Lennon matched each other at either end.

With time running out, Mullaghbawn finished with the final three points of the day to pick up a first-round win.

St Peter’s 0-14 Sarsfields 1-10

A late Niall McConville point secured an opening day Division 1B victory for St Peter’s as they edged past Sarsfields.

The sides were tied heading into the final few minutes of the contest when McConville raised the white flag.

Caolan Maguire traded scores early on with Niall Kerr and Thomas McAlinden before McConville put the hosts ahead.

Ryan Kelly and Eamon McGeown cancelled each other out but McGeown and McAlinden levelled the game.

A Thomas Byrne effort was cancelled out by McGeown before a Niall Creaney brace gave St Peter’s an 8-6 half time lead.

McConville and McGeown opened the scoring for the second half while Maguire and Creaney extended the home lead.

Two McAlinden scores were split by McConville while a McGeown point and Luke Donnelly goal nudged Sarsfields ahead.

Barry Creaney levelled matters before McConville slotted over a free in the 30th minute to secure the win.

On Thursday evening, Culloville survived a late Ballymacnab rally to secure a one-point win, 3-9 to 3-8.
