O’Boyle sinks Louth with late winner

Louth 0-17 Armagh 0-18

A late score from ace Armagh attacker Alex O’Boyle secured his side a one-point victory away to Louth.

The home side has tied things on the 72nd minute, but the Oisin Glenariffe man had the final say to Armagh are the win.

After last week’s defeat to table toppers Donegal, Armagh bounced back to earn their first win of the Nickey Rackard Cup.

Armagh flew into an early lead with three-points in as many minutes. Ciaran Duffy, Liam O’Flaherty and Stephen Renaghan all split the posts.

Louth opened their account through Conor Murphy but is effort was matched by an O’Boyle free.

Darren Geoghegan and Aaron Fox traded points while O’Boyle put Armagh 6-4 up after 20 minutes.

O’Boyle and Geoghegan cancelled each other out before Duffy and Fox grew Armagh’s lead to four.

Two O’Boyle frees were matched at the other end while Paul Gaffney out the visitors ahead 0-12 to 0-7 at half time.

O’Boyle split two Geoghegan frees right after the turnaround while Ronan Mulholland swapped points with Armagh’s top scorer.

Two further frees restored Armagh’s five-point advantage while Geoghegan and Donnelly exchanged efforts.

Five points on the trot from Louth suddenly got them back on level terms, with Geoghegan heavily involved.

O’Boyle and Geoghegan raised white flags at either end before the wing forward slotted over the match winning score in the final minute.

It’s Roscommon up next for Karl McKeegan’s side as they host the Rossies in round three next Sunday evening.
