Division 1A & 1B Previews – Gameday 5

Division 1A

In a repeat of the 2021 Senior Championship decider, Crossmaglen versus Clann Eireann is the big game in Division 1A this week. Both teams are currently tied on six-points from their opening few games.

Clann Eireann defeated Madden last weekend to keep their winning run intact thanks to a late Adam Kelly goal. Jack Conlon chipped in with 0-3 for Ruairi Lavery’s side in a low-scoring 1-8 to 0-8 win.

The Rangers have only lost once this season and that was to table toppers Silverbridge. They overcame Dromintee by two-points last Friday evening, with Cian McConville lined out at centre half forward.

Dromintee will be eager to bounce back on Friday, as will their opponents Madden. Jack McArdle chipped in with 0-3 against Crossmaglen in Dromintee’s most recent outing, while Cathal McKenna and Niall Courtney split 0-4 between them.

Madden played twice last weekend, drawing with Silverbridge on the Friday night before losing to Clann Eireann on Sunday. Patrick Carr starred from midfield against Clann Eireann, kicking 0-2, while Niall Grimley lined out in the red and black.

In the only other Division 1A game this weekend, Niall McAleenan comes up against his former side. McAleenan is currently in charge of Killeavy but led Granemore to the SFC final in 2022.

They beat Killeavy on their way to that decider, in the semi-final, and the pair will lock horns once again. Both sides haven’t started to brightly, Killeavy have only won once while Granemore only have one-point from three games.

Division 1B

Mullaghbawn will be keen to continue their fine start to the season when they travel to Ballymacnab on Thursday. Mullaghbawn have yet to taste defeat in 2024, with seven-points from four games.

The Nab on the other hand are anchored to the bottom of the table with zero wins to their name. These two sides were both relegated from Division 1A at the end of last season and beat each other once apiece in 2023.

Cullyhanna will hope to get back to winning ways after last week’s one-point defeat to Sarsfields. They take on last year’s beaten Senior Championship finalists Clan na Gael on Friday evening.

St Patrick’s were minus a number of star men such as Shea Hoey, Sean Connell and Kieran McCooey last week. Clans picked up a point in their 2-10 to 1-13 tie with Sarsfields last Tuesday evening, where Brendan O’Hagan kicked 1-6.

Sarsfields, with three-points from their last two games, face stiff opposition when they travel to Maghery. The two-time SFC winners beat St Peter’s on Tuesday night (0-11 to 0-8) and currently sit on four points.

St Peter’s and Culloville are currently in the middle of the table, although two-points separate the two teams. That recent defeat sees the Lurgan men slip into the relegation zone while Culloville are midtable.
