Armagh hurlers finish year on a high

Armagh 3-19 Monaghan 0-18

Armagh earned an impressive ten-point win over Monaghan at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds to end their year on a high.

Three second half goals from Tomas Gavlin (2) and Alex O’Boyle saw Armagh cruise to victory.

Monaghan’s task a much tougher one following the dismissal of defender Sean Guinan to a second yellow card in the final quarter.

Armagh’s deadly duo of O’Boyle and Galvin were responsible for most of the damage, hitting 3-14 between them.

The pair opened the scoring while Monaghan’s own attacking ace, Niall Arthur, landed a huge sideline cut.

O’Boyle had a chance to grow Armagh’s advantage, but his penalty effort was turned away by Hugh Byrne.

The Monaghan shot stopper was called into action again and pulled off a fine save to deny Ciaran Duffy.

David Ryan and O’Boyle split the posts and an important hooked tackle from Barry Shortt denied Pauric Malone a goal.

Arthur, who hit 0-12 on the day, finished the scoring for the opening period with Armagh ahead 0-10 to 0-7.

The home side began the second half with a bang as Galvin rattled off 1-1 while Monaghan replied through Arthur (2) and Declan Hughes.

Galvin and Arthur exchanged scores, as did Martin Murphy and O’Boyle before Monaghan were reduced to 14 men.

The Orchard County dominated the final quarter, with Arthur offering Monaghan’s only response at the other end.

O’Boyle and Galvin added further three-points to earn Karl McKeegan’s men a second win of the campaign.
