McGeeney praises super sub Campbell

Kieran McGeeney hailed the impact of super sub Stefan Campbell, who fisted the equalising score against Galway. That point handed Armagh top spot in the group and automatic qualification to the last eight.

Campbell was introduced at half time, coming in for Ciaran Higgins, and finished the game with 0-1. ‘Soupy’ has been a go-to star for the Orchard County throughout McGeeney’s tenure as manager.

The Clan na Gael clubman has hit 1-18 this season for Armagh, his goal coming against Fermanagh in the USFC. Last Sunday was the first time this season that Campbell didn’t start a championship game.

“All of them in fairness, are very mature with things like that,” said McGeeney of the players that didn’t start the game. “The game has changed so much, there are very few teams not using three or four subs and the thing about it is nowadays.

“They nearly need to be better, the ones that are coming on because it’s at that point of the game, the composure and ability to score. Soupy was excellent for us today and I think he’s been excellent all year.

“Probably we just went for a bit of size with (Ciaran) Higgins in terms of their half forward line, so it was more of a tactical thing. Soupy, like every player, he has highs and lows but in general, he’s always around a 7 or an 8 (out of ten) for you.”

Ciaran Higgins earned his first appearance since the opening round of the National League against Louth. The Maghery man hasn’t featured in a championship game since Armagh’s one-point win over Galway last season.

“It’s his first start since last year when he got injured but we thought he did well,” added McGeeney. “But I suppose just with two points down, going up against the breeze, we just needed a wee bit more off the front foot. He took the hit for it, that was just it.”
