Derry defeat Armagh in Minor decider

Armagh suffered a tough three-point defeat in Sunday’s All-Ireland Minor football final at Healy Park Omagh.

The Orchard County took on reigning All-Ireland and Ulster champions Derry in the decider.

Derry had already chalked up two championship victories over Aidan O’Rourke’s side in the championship, including the Ulster final.

Derry opened the scoring with the games first point through Ger Dillon before Armagh replied through Ross Marsden.

The Oak Leafers replied with two on the trot from Eamon Young and Dylan Rocks.

But Armagh pulled one back when Diarmuid O’Rourke tapped over a free.

Fionn Toale then levelled the game for the second time, but Derry shot ahead with a goal in the next attack.

The reigning All-Ireland champions were awarded a penalty kick, expertly converted by captain James Sargent.

Armagh’s response was swift and full back Gavin O’Rourke swept forward to narrow the gap to two-points.

Eoin Duffy and goalkeeper Michael Finnegan smashed over two dead ball efforts to tie things up. That left the score level, 0-6 to 1-3 at the half time break.

Marsden had an early goal chance saved by Jack McCloy but Armagh netminder Finnegan slotted over the resulting 45.

Dillon leveled things up for Derry while Armagh nudged two ahead through Diarmaid O’Rourke and substitute Aaron Garvey.

Derry took over from there however and struck off 1-3 during a scoreless 15 minute period for Aidan O’Rourke’s men.

Man of the Match, Sargent, Luke Grant and Young all pointed while Cody Rocks punched home Derry’s second major.

Diarmuid O’Rourke slotted over a free with Armagh’s final score and their battle to get a leveling goal didn’t materialise.
