We’ve taken a look at three key match ups that could decide the outcome of Saturday’s Junior Championship final.

Conor Donnelly v James McCormack

If Collegeland are going to collect the Sean Quinn Cup, then they need to stop McCormack. It really is as simple as that. Conor Donnelly is their go-to man-marker at the back so he’ll be tasked with the job.

It’s more than a one-man job however and Collegeland will likely have an extra man back there to support Donnelly. Against Thomas Davis, Bartley Finnegan and Ruairi McGeary were freed up as a spare man at different stages.

McCormack was at his electric best against Middletown and rattled off 0-11. Whether playing on the inside line or coming out the field to offer a two-point threat, McCormack has the ability to win a game almost singlehandedly.

Kevin McCann v Tom Murphy

Tom Murphy is one of the players that really makes Collegeland tick. Two years ago, he won a Club All-Star award for his displays at centre half back that saw his side go all the way in the Junior Championship.

He’s moved to midfield this year but remains a force and has chipped in regularly on the scoresheet as well. Kevin McCann is someone who Ballyhegan also look for in terms of their own score rate.

He didn’t register a score the last day out but has been consistent for the Division 3A league champions on year. The midfield battle is going to be absolute crucial, and these two will play big roles for their teams.

Peter McGrane v Jason Kelly

Jason Kelly is the top scorer in the Collegeland ranks for the championship, so Ballyhegan will look to shut him down. Peter McGrane will possibly be the player hand picked to do that particular job.

Kelly was one of three goalscorers in their semi-final victory over Thomas Davis two weeks ago. That was his first goal of the championship campaign and he has rattled off 1-16 for his side so far.

McGrane will want to force him the other way as well too. The 2024 All-Ireland winner joined the attack on numerous occasions against Middletown and sailed over a crucial two-point score.
